1. Lack of well-defined purpose in life
There is no hope for success for the person, who does not have a well-defined purpose, or a goal at which to aim.
2. Lack of ambition to aim above mediocrity
There is no hope for the person who is indifferent as not to want get ahead in life, and who is not willing to pay the price.
3. Insufficient education
This is an impediment, which can be overcome quite easily. It is not only the university degree that is important, but also “self-education”. Any person, who is educated, is one who has learned to get whatever he wants in life without violating the rights of others. Education consists, not so much of knowledge, but of knowledge that is effectively and persistently applied. Individuals are merely paid for what they know; they are paid for what they do with what they know.
4. Lack of discipline
Discipline comes through self-control. This means that we should be able to control all negative qualities. Before we are able to control our surroundings, we must learn to control ourselves. Self-mastery is the trickiest job we will ever tackle.
5. Procrastination
Procrastination is one of the most common reasons for failure. Many people go through life always waiting for the time to be right in order to start something worthwhile. Do not wait! The time will never be just right. Start where you stand and work with whatever tools you have at your command. Eventually, good opportunities will only grow as you go.
6. Lack of persistence
Many people are good “starters”, but poor “finishers” of what they undertake. Furthermore, people are prone to give up at the first signs of failure. Nothing can replace persistence. No one is able to stop a person, unless he/she gives up.
7. Lack of stability in the decision-making process
People, who succeed reach decisions promptly and hardly ever change them, if at all. On the other hand, people, who fail, reach decisions very slowly and constantly change them. Indecision and procrastination go hand in hand. Make sure to eradicate this pair before they tie you to the treadmill to failure.
8. Over-caution
The person, who takes no chances, must get satisfied with the leftovers. Over-caution is as bad as under-caution. Both are extremes, which need to be avoided. Life itself is filled with elements of chance.
9. Superstition and prejudice
Superstition is a form of fear, but is also a sign of ignorance. Individuals, who succeed keep open minds and are afraid of nothing.
10. Lack of concentration of effort
The “jack-of-all-trades” seldom doesn’t lead to anything good. Try to concentrate all your efforts at your chief aim.
11. Lack of enthusiasm
Without enthusiasm, one cannot be convincing. Moreover, enthusiasm is contagious, and the person who has it, is generally welcomed in any social group.
12. Intemperance
Overindulgence is in any form represents one way ticket to failure.
13. Inability to cooperate with others
A lot of individuals lose their positions or opportunities precisely for due to that reason. It is a fault which no well-informed leader will tolerate.
14. Guessing instead of thinking
Most people are too indifferent or lazy to acquire facts to help them think accurately. They prefer to act on snap-judgments or opinions formed by guesswork.
All reasons above are borrowed by Napoleon Hill’s book “Think Rich, Grow Rich.”
