Tips to Help You with IELTS Writing Task 2

Are you preparing for your upcoming IELTS test? We all have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to English and this is why many people need guidance on how to improve in Writing Task 2. So, here are some useful tips:

Plan what to write

It’s so simple, but when you’re in an actual test situation and don’t have a lot of time, it’s so easy to overlook. After reading the question, take a few seconds to outline your main points before you start to write. You’ll be surprised how this simple step can improve your score.

Make your position or point of view as clear as possible

Writing Task 2 looks at your ability to express your opinion clearly in English, not your knowledge of the topic. The best thing to remember is to keep your answer relevant and give an opinion to the best of your ability.

Address the task fully

You have to answer all parts of the question to show your understanding of the written instructions. Take a look at this example:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic:

Some people say that university students should pay the full cost of their education.

Others say that university education should be free.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for both answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Here we can see three things:

  1. The view that university students should pay fees covering the full cost of their studies.
  2. The view that university students should study for free.
  3. And your own personal opinion.

In this situation you should write about all three tasks stated in this question, otherwise, you get a lower score.
